The war dogs that served in WWI

Military dogs performed many specialized tasks during World War I (July 28, 1914 – Nov. 11, 1918). The German military reportedly used around 30,000 dogs, while the Allied forces including the United States, Britain, France, and Belgium used more than 26,000 dogs for military purposes.

These dogs were trained for important duties such as carrying messages between units, locating wounded soldiers, detecting land mines and explosives, guarding camps, and helping troops during dangerous battlefield operations. Several dog breeds proved to be particularly effective in these roles.
